Traditional performance measurement systems are often criticised for focusing on technical, process and financial dimensions of managing performance. They tend to overlook the social dimension and instead create a command-and-control environment, which can lead to fear and disengagement among employees.

Gamified performance board in use

This research project has trialled how gamification can be applied to overcome these limitations and make performance management a more engaging and participatory process.

Gamified performance board in use

The image above shows the gamified performance measurement board that was developed for an operational department of a logistics company. This board has been fully implemented and is currently in use, reflecting our work in transforming the Performance Management system through gamification.

This approach transforms not just the performance measurement system itself but also the way managers and employees interact with and use measures to manage performance in a more participatory way. This technique facilitates team dynamics and enhances open communication and management-employee relationships around performance data.

This initiative is part of a PhD research project led by Sheida Mohebpour in collaboration with Future Positive Consulting and supervised by Professor Umit Bititci from Heriot-Watt University and Dr Agnessa Spanellis from the University of Edinburgh.
